10,000 Links Under the Sea

We released some new feature updates last night, making good things even better. Let’s dive into the details, shall we?

Want data on more links? How about 10,000?
For Unlimited Membership customers, InLinks reports can now request a maximum of 10,000 link details and as few as 1, rather than the standard 1,000. This way you can do really deep dives on larger sites and get a better sense of the linking domains, anchor text distribution and competitors’ overall link strategy.

Just the sub-domain, please.
Now you can focus InLinks reports on a particular Sub-Domain or Page, rather than just at the Domain level. This is particularly helpful if you have a blog from a provider like Blogspot that sets up each new blog on a different sub-domain, or if you’re trying to find out more about links to a specific landing page.

Peer into a crystal ball…

Rank Report Scheduling Tips

Sometimes it’s hard to decide how often and when to schedule your search engine rank reports to run. Here are some scenarios we’ve seen used in WebPosition Reporter:

Daily Rank Reporting

Sample Rank Result Graphs

Volatile vs. Steady

This is most often used in research mode along with competitor tracking to help determine how volatile the rankings are for a keyword. If you see competitor’s rankings bouncing around a lot, that’s one clue that you have a better shot at getting into the mix.

One nice thing about tracking your competitors from the beginning is that you get to see them start to drop off over time! Competitor URLs are displayed in red, and can be excluded from the chart by un-checking the box above the URLs.

Checking Rank Twice a Week

This is a favorite frequency because it gives you more feedback than once a week, but isn’t daily. It’s often enough to alert you Continue reading

Prominence, Proximity & Keyword Density

Each keyword you optimize for has a different set of competitors in the way.

When PageCritic analyzes your web page vs. the top ranked pages for that keyword, it looks at each part of the page and measures the following:

  • Words – How many total words are there in that part of the page?
  • Frequency – How many words from the keyword are there?
  • Weight – What is the percentage of the words in that part of the page from the keyword? This is also known as keyword density.
  • Prominence – How close to the beginning is the keyword is found? A higher score indicates that words from the keyword are found closer to the beginning.
  • Proximity – How close together are the words from the keyword? A higher score indicates that the words are found closer together, preferably in order.

The Top Findings identify large gaps between the page it’s analyzing and the competition, with emphasis on higher ranked pages as well as page elements that have the most impact on rank.

In the example of Top Findings below you can see more detail, Continue reading

Finding Follow-Friendly Links

Do you know how to find Follow-Friendly Links with InLinks?
Not all links are created equal: if the link is marked with rel="nofollow", the search engines can’t follow the yellow brick road to your page. Follow-Friendly links let the search engines through.

Let’s walk you through it:Find Follow Friendly Links

  1. Create an Inlinks report on External Links to the domain of your choice. You could create a report to make sure all internal links on your site are follow-friendly, too.
  2. Click on Domains tab. Here you’ll be able to see website domains with links to you, and the % of links from each domain that are follow-friendly. (From the Anchors tab you can see what % of links using each anchor are follow-friendly.)
  3. Click a Domain to learn more about the links in question. There you’ll see which pages the links originate from, what anchor text they’re using, if they’re follow friendly and which page they’re linking to.

Sure, InLinks can also help you analyze the anchor text for incoming links or to see who is linking to the competition, but this feature can help you find out which of your links are most valuable. You might be surprised!
